The Family-Room Couch That’s Outlasted Two Kids and a Dog.
In most Dover family rooms — the open-concept ones off the kitchen, the bonus rooms behind the garage — the upholstery sees more hours than the carpet, the rug, and the dining chairs put together. Our technician comes to your home with the right method for your specific fabric.
How To Care For Fine Upholstery Between Visits.
High-end fabric lasts decades when it’s cared for between cleanings — and falls apart fast when it isn’t. Here’s what we tell Dover customers to do at home so their Belgian linen, velvet, wool, and fine cotton pieces stay looking right for the long haul.
Use the upholstery attachment, not the floor head. Slow strokes in the direction of the weave. Pay extra attention to cushion seams and the deck under the cushions — that’s where dust, hair, and crumbs accumulate first and grind into the fiber.
Even on a high-end sofa, one cushion gets sat on more than the others. Rotating and flipping monthly distributes wear and keeps the pile or weave from crushing or fading in one spot. The whole piece ages more evenly.
UV is the fastest way to ruin a high-end fabric. Use sheers or shades on south- and west-facing rooms, or reposition the piece seasonally. Velvet, linen, and natural-dye wool are the most vulnerable — we’ve seen pieces fade two shades in a single summer of direct light.
Use a clean white towel and blot straight down — never rub or scrub. Cold water only (heat sets protein stains permanently). If the spill doesn’t lift in a few blots, stop and call us before trying anything stronger. Most permanent damage starts after the homeowner reaches under the sink.
Vinegar, dish soap, OxiClean, and most consumer fabric sprays are too aggressive for fine upholstery. They strip dyes, leave residue that re-attracts dirt, and on natural fibers like silk and wool they can cause permanent damage. If blotting doesn’t work, wait for us.
Even with perfect care, body oils, dust, and dander work into the fabric where vacuuming can’t reach. Fine upholstery cleaned on a 12–18 month rhythm easily lasts 20+ years. Let it go too long, and the soil sets into a permanent gray sheen that won’t fully lift.
The one-sentence rule: if blotting with a clean white towel doesn’t lift it, stop and call us. Most permanent upholstery damage starts after that point, not before.

What An In-Home Upholstery Cleaning Looks Like.
Most jobs are done in one to two hours and you walk away with a sofa that’s dry to the touch within three to four hours under normal conditions. Here’s the order.
Inspect & Fiber Test
We test a hidden corner of the fabric before any solution touches the visible piece. Two minutes, but it’s the difference between a clean sofa and an expensive mistake.
Dry Vacuum & Brush
A high-powered vacuum lifts crumbs, pet hair, and dry soil out of crevices, cushion seams, and the deck under the cushions. About 60% of what’s in a sofa is removed before any cleaner is applied.
Pre-Treat Spots
Wine, coffee, pet accidents, and food stains get individual pre-treatment with the right chemistry for the fabric. We give it a few minutes of dwell time before main cleaning.
Clean With The Right Method
Most fabrics get hot-water extraction with a low-moisture tool. Delicate fibers (silks, certain linens, velvets) get solvent cleaning, no water. Very fragile pieces get vacuum and brush only. The method always matches the fabric.
Speed Dry
Air movers go on the wet sections to drop drying time. Most pieces are dry to the touch in three to four hours, fully dry overnight. We position cushions so air gets to both sides.
Optional MicroSeal
If you opt for protector, we apply MicroSeal after cleaning. It penetrates the fiber rather than coating it — more on that in the FAQ below.
Two Upholstery Service Levels.
Most Dover customers pick by how much daily use the piece sees. The Saver package is the right call for occasional-use furniture; Ultimate Protection makes sense for the high-traffic sectional you sit on every night.
