How Your Rug Gets From Holliston to Cleaned and Back

A Real Timeline, Not a Vague "We'll Get to It."

Here's what actually happens between the phone call and your rug being back on the floor.

Day 0 — You Call or Submit the Form

We talk through what you have, how big it is, and what the issues are. You can drop the rug off at our Milford shop, or we'll schedule a pickup (small fee for pickup & delivery, varies by location). No deposit required.

Day 1–3 — Drop-Off or Pickup

Either you bring the rug to our Milford shop directly (10 minutes from Holliston via Route 16), or our team comes to your home and transports it for you. The detailed inspection happens back at our shop, not on your floor.

Day 4–6 — Inspection & Dusting

At the shop we inspect the rug, identify the fiber and construction, color-test the dyes, and document condition with photos. If the rug is safe to dust this way, we use our large tumble duster to gently work out the dry soil packed into the foundation — most rugs release pounds of dirt at this step alone.

Day 7–9 — The Right Cleaning Method

We don't put every rug through the same process. Wool Orientals, hand-knotted antiques, silks, viscose, and machine-made synthetics all behave differently. Depending on the rug, that might mean full-immersion bath, controlled hand-washing, low-moisture cleaning, or surface treatment — whatever is actually safe and effective for your specific rug.

Day 10–12 — Drying

Some rugs dry best flat. Others go on our rug rack with high-volume fans and a dehumidifier running. The right drying method depends on the rug's construction, weight, and how it was just cleaned. We don't over-dry, and we don't trap moisture in the foundation.

Day 13–14 — Final Inspection & Return

We wrap the cleaned rug in protective plastic. From there, either you pick it up from the shop on a day that works for you, or we deliver it back to your Holliston home (small fee for delivery, varies by location).

Why On-Site Cleaning Fails Area Rugs

An Area Rug Is Not a Section of Wall-to-Wall Carpet.

It's one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in the cleaning industry. A company shows up at your Holliston home, drags your hand-knotted Persian across the floor, blasts it with a hot-water wand, and leaves it to dry in place. Within a week the foundation has wicked moisture into the hardwood underneath. Within a month the dyes have bled. Within a year the fibers have shrunk and the rug is unrecognizable.

Area rugs are meant to be cleaned off-site, in a controlled environment, with the method that's actually right for the rug. We take it to our dedicated shop in Milford (about 10 minutes from Holliston via Route 16), inspect it, dust it, choose the cleaning approach that fits the fiber and construction, dry it correctly, and return it in better condition than it left. No shrinkage. No dye migration. No moisture trapped where it shouldn't be.

  • Call to schedule a drop-off at our Milford shop, or book pickup & delivery (small fee)
  • Off-site cleaning in a controlled environment
  • Color-tested before any water touches the fibers
  • Cleaning method matched to the rug — not a one-size-fits-all process
  • MicroSeal fiber protection available as an add-on — penetrates the fiber, lasts 6–8 cleanings, PFAS-free
  • Written estimate before any work begins
Every Type, Every Origin

The Rugs We Wash for Holliston Customers

Whether it's been in the family since 1952 or you ordered it on Wayfair last spring, we have a method that's safe for it.

P

Persian & Oriental

Hand-knotted antiques, tribal weavings, fine Persians. Color-tested before any cleaning starts, dye-stable rinsing, dried with the method that's right for the rug.

W

Wool Area Rugs

WoolSafe-approved process. pH-neutral, lanolin-preserving wash that protects the fiber's natural durability and luster.

S

Silk & Viscose

Delicate fibers where water in the wrong hands ruins everything. We have specialized lower-moisture methods for these high-risk materials.

A

Antique & Heirloom

Family treasures from older Holliston homes — many original to the house. Museum-grade handling and the gentlest cleaning method for the piece.

M

Modern & Machine-Made

Polypropylene, polyester, and nylon area rugs from Pottery Barn, RH, Wayfair, and similar — cleaned thoroughly and affordably.

U

Pet Urine Decontamination

The right approach depends on the rug, but the goal is the same: actually remove the urine, not mask it. We assess each case and apply the appropriate decontamination process for your specific rug.

⚠️ Important
Be careful with companies offering to "clean your wool or silk rug right on your floor" with a wand. Wand cleaning leaves moisture trapped in the foundation, causes shrinkage of the foundation cotton or wool, and can permanently distort the rug. If a Holliston-area company offers in-place wand cleaning on a fine rug — call us instead. That said, we do make exceptions ourselves: depending on the rug type and soil level, in-home cleaning can be the right call. We'll tell you up front whether your rug is a good candidate.
Holliston, Specifically

Antique Country, Antique Care.

Holliston has a higher concentration of antique and inherited area rugs than almost anywhere else in MetroWest. The older homes around the historic center, the farmhouses along Washington Street, and the larger colonials near Holliston Country Club often have rugs that came with the house, came down through the family, or were purchased decades ago when fine rugs were a household investment, not a furniture-store impulse. These are exactly the rugs that get ruined by inexperienced cleaners.

We've been cleaning rugs in MetroWest for over 25 years. Our shop is set up specifically for the kind of work an antique or hand-knotted rug needs: dye stability testing before any cleaning starts, the right method for the rug (not the same method for every rug), and controlled drying that protects the foundation. We're 10 minutes from Holliston via Route 16. Call ahead to schedule a drop-off time at the shop, or we'll come pick up for a small fee depending on location.

"Lovejoy is a master at getting pet stains out. They can also make rugs with heavy traffic look like new. The rugs on my stairs look like they needed to be replaced and now look brand new. We also have tight weave wool area rugs, and we would not trust cleaning them to anyone else."

Common Questions From Holliston Customers

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer pickup, or do I bring the rug to you?
Both — and many Holliston customers do whichever is easier. You can drop the rug off at our Milford shop (10 minutes via Route 16) — just call ahead at (508) 922-7379 to schedule a drop-off time so we have someone there to receive it. Or we'll come pick it up and deliver it back for a small fee that depends on your location. Call us or use the contact form and we'll walk through what works best for you.
Do you use the same cleaning method on every rug?
No — and that's important. Every rug is different. Wool Orientals, hand-knotted antiques, silks, viscose, and machine-made synthetics all behave differently in water and need different approaches. We choose between full-immersion bath, controlled hand-washing, low-moisture cleaning, or surface treatment based on what's actually safe and most effective for your specific rug. We always color-test the dyes before any cleaning starts.
How long will I be without my rug?
Most rugs are back to your Holliston home within 7–14 days. Antique, hand-knotted, or heavily soiled rugs that need extra dusting or treatment may take a bit longer. We'll give you a clear timeline at pickup and call you the day before delivery.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is by square foot and depends on fiber type and condition. Wool starts higher than synthetic; antique and silk rugs require specialty handling. You get an exact written quote at pickup — before the rug leaves your house, before any work is done.
Do you sell pads?
Yes — and it's worth knowing what you're getting. Our rug pad is custom-cut to the exact size of your rug and includes a built-in moisture barrier that prevents pet accidents, spills, and other liquids from soaking through to the floor underneath. It's made of recycled materials, Green Label certified, non-toxic, and non-allergenic — safe for most types of flooring including vinyl. It also doubles the lifespan of the rug, prevents slipping, and protects whatever finish is underneath. We can deliver the pad with your cleaned rug.
Do you offer moth treatment or long-term rug storage?
Yes — both. We treat rugs for moth protection and wrap them in Tyvek for long-term storage so the rug can breathe while staying fully protected from pests, dust, and humidity. Whether you're stowing a wool or silk rug for the season, during a renovation, a move, or an extended trip, we'll prep and wrap it correctly so it comes back out of storage in the same condition you left it.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
The rug arrives wrapped in protective plastic, so we'll roll it out for you to inspect once it's in place. If anything doesn't look right, we take it back to the shop and re-do it at no charge. We've been doing this for over 20 years; we don't deliver work we're not proud of.
What's the MicroSeal fiber protection?
MicroSeal is an optional add-on that works differently from most fabric protectants. Where typical products (Scotchgard, etc.) coat the outside of each fiber, MicroSeal penetrates the fiber itself — which is why it lasts so much longer. Most rugs we treat hold up through 6–8 professional cleanings done by us before re-application is needed. It's also nearly 100% resistant to sun fading. On the safety side: MicroSeal is non-toxic, non-allergenic, GRAS-certified (Generally Recognized As Safe), and contains no forever chemicals — including no PFAS. Worth it on any rug you plan to keep long-term, and especially good on new rugs from designers or high-end stores.
