What People Actually Bring Us

The Six Most Common Rug Problems We Fix for Bellingham Customers.

When you call us about a rug, it's usually because of one of these. Here's what we actually do about each.

Problem 01

Pet Urine & Odor

"I can still smell it even after we cleaned it ourselves."

What we do: UV inspection at the shop to map exactly where contamination lives in the foundation, then the appropriate decontamination process for that specific rug — submersion if the rug can safely take it, hand-treatment if it can't. The goal is removal, not masking.

Problem 02

Sun Fade & Color Shift

"One side of the rug is two shades lighter than the other."

What we do: Fade can't always be reversed, but it can usually be balanced — we can apply gentle re-saturation chemistry, and we recommend MicroSeal fiber protection on any newly cleaned rug to prevent further fading (nearly 100% resistant to UV).

Problem 03

Water Damage & Mildew

"Pipe burst / dishwasher leak / basement flood — and now it smells."

What we do: Water-damaged rugs need fast, controlled drying with antimicrobial treatment. We pick up quickly, hang it on our rug rack with high-volume fans and a dehumidifier, then clean once dry. The longer it sits wet, the worse it gets.

Problem 04

General Age & Wear

"It's just dull. It's been here ten years and we never cleaned it."

What we do: Most rugs that "feel old" are actually just dust-loaded. Our large tumble duster (if the rug is safe to dust this way) releases pounds of dry soil that no vacuum can reach. Cleaning afterward brings the original colors back.

Problem 05

Dye Bleed Risk

"I'm scared to clean it — last time someone tried it bled."

What we do: We color-test every rug in an inconspicuous corner before any water touches the fibers. If a rug is unstable, we switch to a low-moisture method or specialty dry-cleaning approach. We never put a rug at risk.

Problem 06

Moth Damage & Storage

"I want to store it for a renovation / season / move."

What we do: Clean, treat for moth protection, and wrap in Tyvek so the rug can breathe while staying protected from pests, dust, and humidity. The right way to put a fine rug away for months at a time.

Why On-Site Cleaning Fails Area Rugs

An Area Rug Is Not a Section of Wall-to-Wall Carpet.

It's one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in the cleaning industry. A company shows up at your Bellingham home, drags your hand-knotted Persian across the floor, blasts it with a hot-water wand, and leaves it to dry in place. Within a week the foundation has wicked moisture into the hardwood underneath. Within a month the dyes have bled. Within a year the fibers have shrunk and the rug is unrecognizable.

Area rugs are meant to be cleaned off-site, in a controlled environment, with the method that's actually right for the rug. We take it to our dedicated shop in Milford (about 15 minutes from Bellingham via Route 126), inspect it, dust it if it's safe to do so, choose the cleaning approach that fits the fiber and construction, dry it correctly, and return it in better condition than it left.

  • Call to schedule a drop-off at our Milford shop, or book pickup & delivery (small fee)
  • Off-site cleaning in a controlled environment
  • Color-tested before any water touches the fibers
  • Cleaning method matched to the rug — not a one-size-fits-all process
  • MicroSeal fiber protection available as an add-on — penetrates the fiber, lasts 6–8 cleanings, PFAS-free
  • Moth treatment + Tyvek-wrapped long-term storage available
  • Written estimate before any work begins
Every Type, Every Origin

The Rugs We Wash for Bellingham Customers

From antique Persians passed down through Caryville antique families to a brand-new viscose runner from a Boston designer — every rug type needs its own approach.

P

Persian & Oriental

Hand-knotted antiques, tribal weavings, fine Persians. Color-tested before any cleaning starts, dye-stable rinsing, dried with the method that's right for the rug.

W

Wool Area Rugs

WoolSafe-approved process. pH-neutral, lanolin-preserving wash that protects the fiber's natural durability and luster.

S

Silk & Viscose

Delicate fibers where water in the wrong hands ruins everything. We have specialized lower-moisture methods for these high-risk materials.

A

Antique & Heirloom

Family treasures from older Bellingham homes — many that have been in the same family since the original owner bought the house in the 60s or 70s. Museum-grade handling and the gentlest cleaning method for the piece.

M

Modern & Machine-Made

Polypropylene, polyester, and nylon area rugs from Pottery Barn, RH, Wayfair, and similar — cleaned thoroughly and affordably.

U

Pet Urine Decontamination

The right approach depends on the rug, but the goal is the same: actually remove the urine, not mask it. We assess each case and apply the appropriate decontamination process.

⚠️ Important
Be careful with companies offering to "clean your wool or silk rug right on your floor" with a wand. Wand cleaning leaves moisture trapped in the foundation, causes shrinkage of the foundation cotton or wool, and can permanently distort the rug. If a Bellingham-area company offers in-place wand cleaning on a fine rug — call us instead. That said, we do make exceptions ourselves: depending on the rug type and soil level, in-home cleaning can be the right call. We'll tell you up front whether your rug is a good candidate.
Bellingham, Specifically

Carved Out Of Mendon In 1719. A Working Town Ever Since.

Bellingham was incorporated in 1719 from the southern end of Mendon — one of the older towns in Norfolk County. It’s been a working town ever since: mills along Stall Brook in the 1800s, factories near the Rhode Island line through the 1900s, family neighborhoods in between. The rugs we wash here have been in those same families for two and three generations.

Persians from the 1960s, Orientals brought back from family military service, machine-mades that have been in the living room since Reagan was president. They’re the rugs that get ruined fastest when somebody treats them like wall-to-wall carpet. Newer pieces from Boston designers go in the Caryville and the Silver Lake area builds — Those are typically the rugs we apply MicroSeal fiber protection to before delivery, so spills bead up instead of soaking in. We're 15 minutes from downtown Bellingham via Route 126. Call ahead to schedule a drop-off at our shop, or we'll come pick up for a small fee depending on location.

"Lovejoy is a master at getting pet stains out. They can also make rugs with heavy traffic look like new. The rugs on my stairs look like they needed to be replaced and now look brand new. We also have tight weave wool area rugs, and we would not trust cleaning them to anyone else."

Common Questions From Bellingham Customers

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer pickup, or do I bring the rug to you?
Both — and many Bellingham customers do whichever is easier. You can drop the rug off at our Milford shop (15 minutes via Route 126) — just call ahead at (508) 922-7379 to schedule a drop-off time so we have someone there to receive it. Or we'll come pick it up and deliver it back for a small fee that depends on your location. Call us or use the contact form and we'll walk through what works best for you.
Do you use the same cleaning method on every rug?
No — and that's important. Every rug is different. Wool Orientals, hand-knotted antiques, silks, viscose, and machine-made synthetics all behave differently in water and need different approaches. We choose between full-immersion bath, controlled hand-washing, low-moisture cleaning, or surface treatment based on what's actually safe and most effective for your specific rug. We always color-test before any cleaning starts.
How long will I be without my rug?
Most rugs are back to your Bellingham home within 7–14 days. Antique, hand-knotted, or heavily soiled rugs that need extra dusting or treatment may take a bit longer. We'll give you a clear timeline at drop-off or pickup and call you the day before delivery.
Can you clean a rug with pet urine damage?
Yes — this is one of our specialties. We use UV inspection at the shop to locate contamination and then apply the right decontamination approach for your specific rug. In severe cases (multiple incidents over time, urine fully saturated into the foundation), we'll be honest about what's realistic.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is by square foot and depends on fiber type and condition. Wool starts higher than synthetic; antique and silk rugs require specialty handling. You get an exact written quote at drop-off or pickup — before the rug leaves your house, before any work is done.
Do you sell rug pads?
Yes — and it's worth knowing what you're getting. Our rug pad is custom-cut to the exact size of your rug and includes a built-in moisture barrier that prevents pet accidents, spills, and other liquids from soaking through to the floor underneath. It's made of recycled materials, Green Label certified, non-toxic, and non-allergenic — safe for most types of flooring including vinyl. It also doubles the lifespan of the rug, prevents slipping, and protects whatever finish is underneath. We can deliver the pad with your cleaned rug.
What's the MicroSeal fiber protection you mentioned?
MicroSeal works differently from most fabric protectants. Where typical products (Scotchgard, etc.) coat the outside of each fiber, MicroSeal penetrates the fiber itself — which is why it lasts so much longer. Most rugs we treat hold up through 6–8 professional cleanings done by us before re-application is needed. It's also nearly 100% resistant to sun fading. On the safety side: MicroSeal is non-toxic, non-allergenic, GRAS-certified (Generally Recognized As Safe), and contains no forever chemicals — including no PFAS. It's an optional add-on, but worth it on any rug you plan to keep long-term.
Do you offer moth treatment or long-term rug storage?
Yes — both. We treat rugs for moth protection and wrap them in Tyvek for long-term storage so the rug can breathe while staying fully protected from pests, dust, and humidity. Whether you're stowing a wool or silk rug for the season, during a renovation, a move, or an extended trip, we'll prep and wrap it correctly so it comes back out of storage in the same condition you left it.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
The rug arrives wrapped in protective plastic, so we'll roll it out for you to inspect once it's in place. If anything doesn't look right, we take it back to the shop and re-do it at no charge. We've been doing this for over 20 years; we don't deliver work we're not proud of.
